Back from the East Coast

Our annual summer trip to the east coast is always a highlight of the year. One of my favorite parts is walking miles and miles through NYC just people watching. This year Mike and I decided to explore Brooklyn. It started off well with a gorgeous walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Then as we meandered through Brooklyn Heights, we began to wilt quickly. All our plans (to visit Ample Hills Creamery, to visit Prospect Park, to visit an old friend) began to wilt as well. NYC was in the middle of a heat wave! We made a half-hearted search for the galleries in Williamsburg before we decided to abandon the walk for the train back to Manhattan. It's on that train that we sat across from the 4 sisters pictured above. All had the same long hair that fell across their eyes. The 2nd one from the right was the only one that stayed awake on the ride. Under the premise of combing her bangs, she shyly observed Mike and I from beneath the curtain of her thick bangs. I loved the body language of the sisters, so comfortably squeezed together even though empty seats surrounded them. The observant sister's shy smile still makes me laugh—we were each caught in the act of watching each other.

I love this piece. The lines are dynamic and full of energy. Beautiful work.

Thanks, Shelley! I actually drew this later in the day. Trying to capture the close relationship of the sisters rather than the exact details :).
