One story I remember very clearly from childhood is the story of The City Mouse and The Country Mouse. I think about this story a lot, because growing up, I always thought I'd lead a very glamorous life in Manhattan. My imagined life involved "important" things like going out to fancy restaurants and attending hip gallery openings in very fancy clothes.
Recently we considered spending an extended amount of time in a city. But this would involve bringing our dog Prudence. She is used to running freely in our small yard, daily walks where she is off the leash running across lava fields chasing goats and chickens or barking at wild pigs in the woods. This made me realize that we are the Country Mouse. Imagining Prudence in the city, what would she chase—would her life change to one of perfumed baths and fancy pedicures at the doggy salon?
