I always liked seeing artists in their studios. Some are pristine and organized, some a mess. One of my favorite studio images is of Alexander Calder. He sits in a huge room that is is piled with tangles of wire, metal plates, wood, paint. What struck me is that if you were a little kid in that room, you would not be able to stop yourself from diving in and playing/experimenting. My space is a small loft. Though I try to cultivate a space that encourages play, the space is open to our main living area so I have to keep it somewhat clean. The most chaotic part is the bulletin board behind me. It has family pics, postcards from gallery shows on the mainland, experiments hung up to dry, sketches for work in progress. And almost always at my feet lies my happy dog Prudence who is either resting from a walk or waiting to go on a walk.
